A quick fire chat about working life with Iona Proebst
The Short Cut designed to bring you a snapshot of our members’ working lives. Today we’re speaking to Iona Proebst founder and Director of The Branch Foundation.
At the heart of the Nurture Network is the power of sharing experiences. From breakthrough career moments, to best ever advice, how to deal with stress and the women that inspire them.
Tell us about your breakthrough career moment
When I realised that you can do what you love and create a career path that sits outside the box.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?
“You are the master of your own destiny.” I appreciate this can be a little scary but also very freeing and empowering.
Have you ever felt held back as a women? How do you respond?
I have! I’ve felt like people did not take me as seriously or think I was as intelligent as my male counterparts. For me, it has worked as a driving force to prove them wrong. Everyone has a voice which should be heard.
How do you protect your mental health in moments of pressure?
Remember everything is a phase and will pass. I’ve also become a big advocate for self-care and prioritising a work-life balance. It’s often the small things that help, breathing a little deeper, taking a few minutes to enjoy a coffee before it goes cold, and staying in touch with friends. Things that help keep my emotional balance so that I am better equipt to deal with pressure.
The woman who empowers me is…
That’s a tough one as I honestly can’t choose one. There are many woman who have inspired and empowered me over the years.
I feel empowered when…
I can say that I tried my best and can see what I have achieved.
The world would be a better place when…
When we learn from each other and care for each other more.
The woman who everyone should know about it…
The beautiful old lady in a refugee camp I work in whom I had the privilege to call Grandma.
We did not speak the same language, have the same culture or come from the same country but we loved and cared for each other like we were family.
Do you have any hobbies to keep you busy in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, doing yoga and going on fun adventures with my four-year-old.
Where is your favorite place in the world?
That one’s easy! Piha beach, in West Auckland, New Zealand where I grew up.
