Today we’re speaking to Julianne Trinh, Lead Product Design at sync.money.

Tell us about your breakthrough career moment

When I moved to the UK and decided to pursue a career that I knew nothing about.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

There’s always a way.

Have you ever felt held back as a woman in business? How did you respond?

Not specifically, but sometimes when I go to events it is very male-dominated, which sometimes can feel uncomfortable.

How do you protect your mental health in moments of pressure?

I make lists, usually of what needs to be done, who I need help from and what is out of my control.

Do you have any hobbies to keep you busy in your spare time?

I read a lot and I love wandering around the streets.
I am currently reading a book called Start with Why by Simon Sinek.
When we create something, we sometimes think a lot about what we are creating. This book reminds me to remember to always think about why we are creating something.

I recently finished a book called Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. This book is inspiring because she talks about working in tech as a female, mother and wife. She has reassured me that very successful people, still struggle, and it’s OK to struggle sometimes.

I feel empowered when…

I am solving problems that will help people, usually in a design setting.
For example: at sync, we offer online debit cards to allow extra security when purchasing online.

Our challenge was to educate and encourage the use of these cards.

We tackled this problem in two ways:

1) We made online cards more identifiable. We created a feature to allow users to personalise their cards.

2) We worked with marketing to help users understand the benefits through blogs, social media and email marketing.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

On a beach. I love driving to Phillip Island and Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and going to the beaches there.
