The Short Cut:

A quick fire chat about working life with Rebecca Miles

Rebecca Miles, Co-Founder of Nourish Communications

The Short Cut designed to bring you a snapshot of our members’ working lives. Today we’re speaking to Rebecca Miles, Co-Founder of Nourish Communications.

At the heart of the Nurture Network is the power of sharing experiences.

From breakthrough career moments, to best ever advice, how to deal with stress and the women that inspire them.

Tell us about your breakthrough career moment

Launching Nourish Communications a year ago – I’ve been self-employed for a long time, but creating Nourish with my business partner has given me direction and focus as I’m no longer ‘just’ a copywriter; I’m co-founder of a branding agency that has grand plans, and I couldn’t do it on my own.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

Just do the thing. Eat the frog!

Have you ever felt held back as a women? How do you respond?

I guess I have in that I’m naturally the main parent (as supportive as my husband is), and it’s frustrating not to be able to always easily go to networking events etc, especially when they’re at the beginning or end of the day – that’s prime childcare time for me.

How do you protect your mental health in moments of pressure?

Good question! Try to get out for a walk in Victoria Park, do some exercise of sorts, and phone a friend.

The woman who empowers me is…

My female friends and the many female small business owners I know

I feel empowered when…

I exercise first thing in the morning, and when a potential client says ‘YES’.

The world would be a better place when…

We measure growth not by GDP but by taking into account the planet’s finite resources.

The woman who everyone should know about it…

My business partner Lyndsey Thomas – she’s a force of nature!

Do you have any hobbies to keep you busy in your spare time?

I like to be outdoors, and I like baking, but growing my business takes a lot of time and any free time is spent either with my family or catching up with friends (ideally doing something fun like a theatre trip).

Where is your favorite place in the world?

Sardinia.

Do you want to tell us anything more?

I came late and had to leave early at a talk that the Nurture Network founder Marie-Claire gave at the City’s Small Business Enterprise + Research Centre – I was sorry I couldn’t stay for longer, but I really enjoyed the snippet I heard and am so pleased to have come across the Nurture Network!
